Giving Dorm-Room Essentials a Second Chance
ReDorm
Every spring, college students throw away furniture, appliances, electronics, and other items that are still perfectly useful. Every fall, another group of students arrives and buys many of those things again.
Mariah Brown noticed that cycle during her freshman year and decided to interrupt it.
With Fernanda Kligerman, she created ReDorm, a nonprofit used-goods marketplace for college communities.
ReDorm offers online ordering, door-to-door donation pickup, storage, and affordable resale of useful dorm-room items. The model reduces waste while helping students who may not be able to afford everything new.
"Hunter's Fund helped us tremendously with our startup and operational expenses," Mariah and Fernanda later reported.
Their idea makes sustainability practical. A lamp, mini-fridge, or piece of furniture does not need to become trash simply because its first owner is moving out.
