The Mentor Who Listens First

Janice Harvey

Behind many young innovators is someone who listened first.

Janice Harvey, mentor to Aidan Turner and Lucas d’Oelsnitz (creators of SOLACE Collective, tagless seamless garments for neurodivergent clients), starts with questions—not advice—so students can hear themselves think. She helps them turn what matters to them into a practical action plan, often asking, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” If they’re unsure, she plants a seed they can explore.

Janice believes student entrepreneurship is thriving thanks to incubators and launchpad programs, and she encourages more adults to mentor: listen without judgment and help students aim toward meaningful goals.

Because opportunity isn’t only funding—sometimes it’s an adult who listens first.

HONOR POTENTIAL. CHANGE THE FUTURE.

Hunter’s spirit lives on every time a young person hears, “I believe in you.”
