Can Tech Bring More Fairness to Baseball?

Karim Toufiq, a graduate of City College of New York, and a Hunter’s Fund grant winner, is working to make amateur baseball more fair.
He co-founded ZoneCast, a company that uses cameras and software to call balls and strikes more accurately.

“Starting in the summer of 2023, we hatched an idea to improve the amateur baseball scene with technology,” says Karim.

ZoneCast uses a simple camera setup that works on most baseball fields.
It’s designed to stop arguments and help the game run smoothly.

“Inconsistent strike calls often lead to heckling and even physical altercations that serve no place within youth sports,” he explains.

Karim built the first version with a basic webcam.

“This system gives players and coaches more control and helps avoid being penalized for poor pitch calls,” he says.

Thanks to Hunter’s Fund and your direct support, he’s developing the system further and bringing it to more leagues—one step closer to fair play for everyone.
