Mentoring with Heart: Sandy Johnson’s Experience with Hunter’s Fund

Sandy Johnson

For Sandy Johnson, mentoring is more than volunteering—it’s a chance to walk alongside a young person as they pursue a dream. She believes encouragement and steady support can make all the difference: when someone believes in you, it matters.

Through Hunter’s Fund, Sandy found you don’t have to be an expert in a grant winner’s project to help. A mentor’s role is to listen, ask good questions, offer encouragement, and help a student think through challenges and next steps.

Sandy holds weekly check-ins—often just 15 minutes—to celebrate progress, address concerns, and maintain accountability. Hunter’s Fund makes the process approachable by providing background materials and ongoing support, so mentors can focus on what matters most: building trust and connection.

For Sandy, mentoring is “all positive”—a rewarding way to help young dreamers move closer to turning their ideas into reality.
