The Next Leap in Safer Driving
AI boards are powering a new era of accident prevention
Along with supporting the ideas of young innovators, Hunter’s Fund works to change driving behavior to reduce the loss of life from driving accidents. Technology is helping us do this through the growing use of safe-driving features in today’s vehicles.
Until recently, fully automated driving seemed limited to pioneers like Tesla and Waymo (owned by Google). Both developed proprietary systems combining powerful onboard computers with extensive networks of cameras, radar, and AI software. Their success has shown how automation can drastically reduce accidents caused by human error—the leading factor in more than 90% of crashes.
Now, a quiet revolution is emerging that could level the playing field for all other carmakers. NVIDIA’s new DRIVE AGX platform servs as the brain of a vehicle’s vision system, processing data from cameras and radar in real-time at trillions of operations per second (TOPS)—anticipating hazards faster than a human driver.
Mercedes-Benz is already integrating the platform into its next-generation models. Volvo’s ES90 will feature dual DRIVE AGX Orin processors, and General Motors, along with several Chinese EV makers, has joined the movement. Instead of a few brands holding exclusive self-driving capabilities, dozens could soon build vehicles equipped with similar AI-driven safety systems.
“The building blocks of autonomy are no longer confined to a few brands—they’re becoming the foundation for safer roads everywhere.”
As this technology spreads, the potential to prevent distracted-driving crashes multiplies. What began as a high-end experiment for those who could afford it could soon become a standard safety feature, bringing all of us closer to a future where accident-free travel is not just a dream but an expectation.
With Hunter’s Fund leading efforts to change driver behavior and AI helping make vehicles safer, we look forward to the day when vehicle-related deaths can be reduced by 90% worldwide.
