Why Most Crashes Happen — and
What We Can Do About It

Each year in the U.S., nearly 43,000 people die in car crashes — more than 100 every single day. It’s the #1 cause of death for young adults.

But here’s what many people don’t realize:
More than 90% of crashes are caused by human error.
That includes:

  • Distraction (texting, eating, adjusting music)

  • Impairment (alcohol or drug use)

  • Speeding or aggressive driving

  • Drowsiness or inattention

These aren’t just accidents. They’re preventable tragedies.

At Hunter’s Fund, we launched Safe Driving Week campaigns to take action. On college campuses across the country, student volunteers are helping their classmates pledge not to drive distracted. And it’s making a difference.

But we know that awareness alone isn’t enough.
That’s why we’re also exploring how technology can help.
