ALERTS / Alcohol Language Early Risk Tool for Suicide
Warning signs are not always spoken plainly. Sometimes they appear in the words people use when they are struggling.
Colin Jarratt is developing ALERTS, the Alcohol Language Early Risk Tool for Suicide. Working in suicide research, he is using natural language processing to study patterns in alcohol-related language that may reflect distress, hopelessness, or other warning signs.
His first goal is to build an analytic pipeline, prepare and analyze relevant text data, and generate early findings that could inform future suicide-prevention tools. The project is research at an early stage, but it asks an important question: can patterns in everyday language help professionals notice risk sooner?
