Safe Driving Starts the Night Before

At Hunter’s Fund, we talk often about phone use behind the wheel. But not every risky drive begins with a phone. Some begin with too little sleep.

That can be easy for young drivers to shrug off. Late nights, early mornings, school, work, and packed schedules can make exhaustion feel normal. But tired driving can quietly wear down attention, patience, and reaction time before the trip even starts. A driver may not feel alarmed. They may just feel a little slower, a little less sharp, or less aware of what is happening around them.

That is what makes drowsy driving so easy to underestimate. It does not always look dramatic. It can look like missing signs, drifting through a familiar drive, or taking longer to respond to something unexpected. Those moments matter.

Rest belongs in the safe driving conversation. So does honesty. If you are struggling to stay alert, yawning constantly, or having trouble focusing, that is worth taking seriously. Sometimes the smartest choice is to stop, switch drivers, or wait until you are more rested.

Hunter’s Fund exists to help young people make safer choices before tragedy enters the picture. Your support helps us widen that message so it covers the full reality of road safety, including the risks people do not always think about right away.
