Back-to-School Road Safety: What Every Driver Should Know

As students head back to school, road safety matters more than ever. Here are four key facts backed by research:

1. Watch Your Speed
In school zones, speed limits are often reduced to 15 to 25 mph for good reason. Pedestrian fatality risk jumps dramatically with speed, from just 5% at 20 mph to 45% at 30 mph, and 80% at 40 mph. It takes roughly 69 feet to stop at 20 mph, compared to 123 feet at 30 mph.

2. Avoid Distracted Driving
Looking away from the road for even two seconds doubles the risk of a crash. Texting while driving is as dangerous as driving drunk.

3. Never Pass a Stopped School Bus
In all 50 states, passing a stopped school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop‑arm is illegal. The area within 10 feet of the bus is especially risky; most fatal bus‑related injuries involve children walking near the bus or a motorist illegally passing it.

4. Stay Alert for Pedestrians
Pedestrian deaths remain high — over 7,300 killed in traffic crashes in 2023, or about one every 72 minutes in the U.S. Drivers should always be on the lookout for unexpected movements, especially near schools and in school zones.

By following posted speeds, putting your phone away, respecting school buses, and watching for pedestrians, we help keep everyone safe during the school year.
